Coup de Cœur: Feb 8, 2025

Batuki Music Society and Alliance Française de Toronto present Coup de Coeur on Saturday February 8 at the Spadina Theatre at 8:00 PM. Coup de Coeur is a West African group based in Montreal, curated by Batuki Music Society, that features Senegalese musicians: Sadio Sissokho on kora, percussion and vocals, guitarist Assane Seck, singer Seydina Ndiaye, singer and guitarist ILAM, tama player Pape Ndiaye and bassist Carlo Birri. This star-studded collective unites the talents of these artists, each an expert in their individual style and together performing songs that define regional variations, styles and melodies of traditional and popular West African music forms.

This special concert presentation in honour of Black History Month features an exceptional assemblage of vocalists and instrumentalist. Get ready for an unforgettable evening!

SADIO SISSOKHO – JUNO award winning multi-instrumentalist (kora, djembe, sabar, percussion, vocals) born in Senegal in a family of musicians, story tellers, historians, singers and dancers, collectively known as Griots, passing on their art from father to son since the 14th century. Sadio performs with many groups in Montreal and is a member of Okavango African Orchestra.

ASSANE SECK – son of the celebrated musician and Griot Zale Seck, his gift and passion for the guitar brought him from Senegal to perform with many legendary groups all over the world. He has collaborated with more than 30 artists, won various awards for his contributions to recordings and is well-loved at home in Montreal and in Senegal.

SEYDINA NDIAYE – a truly extraordinary Senegalese artist with a powerful and soulful voice. His music addresses themes such as peace, sharing, family, love and raising awareness on social issues facing society. He has collaborated and shared the stage with many internationally renowned artists such as Xalam 2, Pape et Cheikh, Cheikh Lo, Souleymane Faye, Fallou Dieng, Afrotronix, among others.

ILAM – Singer and guitarist, he draws from his Fula roots to present a music style inspired by Sahel blues, Afropop, reggae, jazz and soul. Singing in French, English, Fulani and Wolof, his superb voice reaches into the depth of one’s soul. A Révélation Radio Canada winner in 2017, ILAM has been awarded Best Album of the Year at ADISQ and Best World Music Album at the GAMIQ Gala in 2020.

PAPE NDIAYE – an exceptional tama (talking drum) player, one of the emblematic instruments of Senegalese traditional and modern music. He was a percussionist for the Orchestre National de Senegal, one of the most prestigious orchestras attached to the Ministry of Culture. He is a regular performer with Zale Seck, an emblematic figure of Senegalese music based in Montreal.

CARLO BIRRI – an accomplished bass guitarist based in Montreal and well-experienced in a wide variety of music genres and traditions. He is in high demand as a performer and recording artist with many African and global music groups, a popular figure in the Montreal and international music circuit.
