Ilam: May 13, 2023
Batuki Music Society and Alliance Française Toronto present ILAM on Saturday May 13.
ILAM believes that music is universal and that it transcends languages. He sings in Wolof, Peulh, French, and English. Born in Dakar, Senegal, ILAM draws from his Fula roots to propose a musical style inspired by Sahel blues and afropop, with accents of reggae, jazz, and soul.
ILAM released an album on the GSI Musique label entitled Néné, which means ‘mother.’ This album was named Best Album of the Year in the World Music category at the ADISQ in 2020, and was awarded Best Album of the Year in the World Music category at the GAMIQ Gala the same year.
Directed by Assane Seck, son of the famous Zale Seck, the album Néné features exceptional collaborators, including the legendary Baaba Maal and the afropop band Meta and The Cornerstones, originally from Senegal, as well as Yann Perreau and André Vanderbiest (Les Colocs).
Batuki Music gratefully acknowledges the support of Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Canadian Heritage and Alliance Française Toronto.
