\nThe Jay Danley EthioJazz Project & Fantahun Shewankochew<\/span>
\npresented by Lula Music and Arts Centre in association with Batuki Music Society.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The concert will feature compositions by both Danley and Shewankochew as well as a few surprises.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Jay Danley EthioJazz Project<\/span><\/span>
\nJay Danley<\/a>\u2019s compositions combine Ethiojazz (Ethiopian scales with jazz) with influences from Latin, modern jazz, ambient and progressive music. The project is inspired by Ethiopian musician Mulatu Astatke of the legendary \u00c9thiopiques<\/a> recordings. Danley creatively explores the deep beauty of Ethiopian music.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fantahun Shewankochew<\/span><\/span>
\nA master in the unique tunings of Ethiopian music, Fantahun Shewankochew<\/a> is an acoustic krar player, multi instrumentalist, composer, arranger and vocalist who has performed throughout the world. His extensive discography includes an album of Ethiopian love songs<\/a> (1997), featuring the popular singer Gigi.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This collaboration has an interesting back story…<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
In February 2012, Batuki Music Society presented a concert called Ethiopia: A Musical Perspective<\/a> at Glenn Gould Studio, featuring an all-star collective which included Shewankochew. Danley was in the audience that night and was absolutely amazed.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

A year later, Danley\u2019s group played a gig at Lula Lounge<\/a> which Shewankochew attended, and meeting Danley afterwards, agreed to work together. Lulaworld was approached and decided that this collaboration would be a great way to open the 2013 festival.<\/object>The Jay Danley EthioJazz Project:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
