\"\"<\/a>Groove to the desert beats of a nine-piece ensemble that brings to life North Africa\u2019s Sahara region, crossing cultural borders and genres. Each member of the ensemble offers a deeply personal performance grounded in their connections to the countries of the Maghreb\u2014 Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, and Egypt. The Maghreb is home to the largest population of African Muslims, who share the written language of Arabic and its different spoken dialects, adding to the musicality of the region\u2019s traditional songs.<\/p>\n

This performance is presented in collaboration with Batuki Music for our 2019\/20 Performing Arts season, Listening to Each Other, which pays tribute to the role of the performative arts in connecting communities, preserving culture, and spurring social change. It\u2019s also part of our fall season \u2014 Africa! \u2014 which explores new dimensions of the vast and complex continent with a world-class lineup of art, performers, and speakers.<\/p>\n

Saturday November 2 – The Magreb Project brings to life the desert sounds of the Sahara region of North Africa. Crossing cultural borders from Marrakesh to Algiers to El Obeid to Cairo, and weaving a tapestry of captivating sounds that celebrate their rich cultural heritages. Multi-instrumentalists, Hassan El Hadi<\/a>, Fethi Nadjem<\/a>, Haiba Ali Hussein<\/a> and Maryem Hassan Tollar<\/a> share a deep cultural connection through the language, stories and songs that define their North African heritage.
